“Zeppelin grandstand”. Golden figurines by Arno Breker

Here we will devote a rather unknown but very interesting detail on the history of the Nuremberg „Zeppelintribüne“ (Zeppelin grandstand) on the former „Reichsparteitagsgelände“ (Party Rally Grounds) in Nuremberg:

Until the „Reichsparteitag 1939“ the erection of two gilded sculptures and sculptures by Arno Breker was planned in the colonnade of the „Zeppelintribüne“ (in each outer front sides). On the one hand the figure with the title „procurer“, on the other the figure of „readiness“. Height of the two figures (from head to foot plate): approx. 3.89 m. Height of the stone pedestal: approx. 1.5 m.
On isolated contemporary black-and-white figures, the platforms are recognizable at the extreme ends of the respective column intersections.

We own two pictures showing the statue „Künder“ („procurer“) (as a plaster figure?) In original size on the podium of the western face. Our picture montages are based on the size of the statues on these pictures.

The statue „readiness“ at the eastern front – integrated into the present building situation. Was this sculpture planned to be erected there in 1939? Because: The figure looks to the left – and not to the right in the direction of the crowd and the field of march.

Here the motif of the „procurer“ with a column superimposition – and: a female comparison person (about 1.70 m high?). In addition: the original columns of 1939. The height of the respective Breker sculpture can be determined very well by both parameters. Height of the figure: approx. 3.89 m. Plus height of the base: approx. 1.5 m.

Here the motive with the „readiness“. As written: the figure looks to the left. To the right lies the grandstand and the Zeppelin field itself. The statue so turns away. In our opinion „dramatically not the best way“.

The statue „readiness“ on the western face – used in the current building situation. The figure looks on this podium to the left – and thus right in the direction of the crowd and the field of deployment. This is the dramaturgically better place for us.

Possibly, the figure of „readiness“ was not yet available in original size in the summer of 1939 – but that of the „procurer“ already.

Here the western small end of the grandstand with the columns in additon, the „procurer“ and the comparative person (about 1.7 m). Possible height of the figure: approx. 3.89 m. Plus height of the base: approx. 1.5 m.

The figure looks on this podium to the left – and thus in the direction of the crowd and the field of deployment. This is the dramaturgically better place for us, because in the sense of the Nazi ideology it was to load up the marchers „finally“ with aggression „“ and to agree them on to war. The statue „procurer“ in comparison comes more in a balancing and warning effect for us.
